NPLRA members may recall that there was a fair bit of media coverage about the Wild Rice situation in Pigeon Lake last summer and fall. Recently, your Board of Directors contacted the Trent-Severn Waterway (Parks Canada) to get more information. Parks Canada got back to us and indicated that they are committed to maintaining up to date information on the Parks Canada Website about the ongoing consultations between Parks Canada and the First Nations regarding Wild Rice, as it becomes available.

Parks Canada indicates that they “very much appreciate being able to work with stakeholders such as yourselves in the on-going management of the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Valterra Resource Corporation (“Valterra” or the “Company”) (VQA-TSX.V)
reports that it has elected  not to exercise its Property Option Agreement dated June 1, 2012 wherein the Company had been granted an option to acquire a 100% interest in the Bobcaygeon Graphite Property in Southern Ontario. The Company feels that under the current difficult market conditions further property and option expenditures are not warranted on the property and intends to focus on its 100% owned porphyry/shear-hosted copper-gold-silver Swift Katie Project in southeastern British Columbia near Salmo.

The Council of the Municipality of Trent Lakes will hold a Regular Council Meeting on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 1:00 p.m.

A delegation will be received from Dewdney Mountain Farms regarding a proposed Haul Route for the Dewdney Mountain Farms Quarry.

Great turnout for NPLRA’s AGM

There was a great turn out of close to 100 people at the recent AGM for North Pigeon Lake Ratepayers Association at the Lawn Bowling club. The Blue Canoe display was present as well as informative presentations from FOCA and Professor, Archeologist James Conolly from Trent University took place.   His presentation on the history of the Trent Severn included archeology finds on Jacob Island and Boyd Island which provided great insight to the rich history of our area. As previously announced, Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) is in negotiations with the owner of Boyd Island for securement of the property. A confidential Letter of Intent has been given to KLT by the owner of the property, Mr. Michael Wilson, subject to certain conditions. Up on satisfaction of these conditions, it is the intent of the landowner to donate the property to KLT. It is the intention of KLT to accept the donation, provided sufficient capital funds can be raised in the community to support continued ownership, management and stewardship of the property in perpetuity. The extensive cuts to TSW staff and hours of lock operation have had a major impact. Compared to the year before 29,833 less vessels passed through the TSW locks in 2013 (99,515 less vessels than in 1994). Although still being the busiest lock of the canal Bobcaygeon Lock 32 vessel traffic was down by 18.5%. www.trentsevern.com

June has been a busy month for the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) with multiple announcements and a community meeting right here in Trent Lakes.

News Release June 19, 2015: The Harper Government announced major new infrastructure investments for across the TSW in the amount of $285 million.
According to Parks Canada this money is available over the next two fiscal years.
